Welwyn Wailers

(The following extract is taken from The Welwyn  Magazine September 2022 edition).

A local charity group formed in 1973 by Dr Roger Aubrey as a way to raise money for cancer charities. A series of pantomimes and Olde Tyme Music Halls were presented for many years and proceeds were presented to many local charities, principal among which were the Danesbury and QVM Hospital, Isabel Hospice, and the Sue Ryder Home. The very first cheque went to Macmillan Nurses.

Sadly the Wailers closed down in 2022 due to their inability to continue to present Shows due initially to the Covid-19 lockdowns, and then subsequently through reduced support needed to run the Group.

Since the first Pantomime show “Dick Twittington” was presented in 1974, the Welwyn Wailers went on to raise  £232,626 for local charities, and along the way Brian King was presented by Queen Elizabeth II with the MBE for his services to charity.

A great loss to the community here in Welwyn.
